Beach Jewelry Line The sea shells used in the Beach Jewelry are: Abalone, Clam, Cockle, Cone/Puka, Cowrie/Leho, Dove, Dwarf Janthina, Jingle, Limpet/Opihi, Mosaic, Mother of Pearl, Nassa, Olive, Oyster, Pandora, Periwinkle, Red/ Black Lip, Scallop, Tegula, and Thorn Drupe. Most of these shells I have hand collected from the Maui, or central California beaches. I drill, sand, sculpt, and polish the shells |
I use Abalone as one of the types of shells in my shell jewelry to make hand sculpted pendants, earrings, beads, and charms in my Beach Jewelry Line. I get my shells for my Abalone jewelry from my family members, who enjoy the diving; the battle against the raging seas to pry
Hemp Jewelry
The hemp jewelry in the Beach Jewelry line is made with hemp string that is macramé or chain braided into chokers/necklaces, anklets, and bracelets. I use Sterling Silver Bali beads, fossil/bone beads, wood beads, shark cartilage from a vintage 1960's Hawaiian surfer necklace, and my handcrafted shells as beads, charms and pendants in the making of this Beach Jewelry. The hemp softens and strengthens with more wear, and can be worn in the water, thus making it a favorite among surfers, swimmers, and beach lovers!! These designs are for girls and guys, and are all one-of-a-kind pieces! Custom lengths and clasps are available as options when ordering. them from their rocks, and then the feast after. This is a rare shell in Central California because of their limited numbers, short harvesting season, and that it is a highly sought after food delicacy. I use Red, Pink, Green and Black Abalone varieties when available. The name just references the color of the outer shell, which in turn, affects its inner iridescent hues. In New Zealand there is a bluer variety that the locals call Paua (this is the most common in the jewelry market). The term Mother-of-Pearl" is used occasionally in relation to Abalone jewelry, when referencing the iridescent "pearly" inner section of the shell, but in all actuality "the mother of the pearl" is the Oyster ! In some cases they can have similar hues to the inside of their shell. The Abalone, though, in my opinion is far more striking in its vivid variety of colors!
NOTE: Abalone, however, is a highly toxic shell when cutting into, sanding, and grinding. You must use a highly protective breathing mask. Because of the rarity, the hazards in harvesting, and the dangers in manufacturing, legitimate Abalone products will be more expensive! There are fabricated Abalone look-a-likes out there that are very cheap to come by, that are dyed into a variety of colors, but in my opinion also look cheap! So buyer beware, know the difference as a consumer, AND whenever possible support your local American industry. China, Indonesia, and the Philippines do not have the same laws governing Abalone harvesting, and their workers' labor also comes cheap. I have also collected a variety of semi-precious stones from the same beaches as the shells that I use in my Beach Jewelry Line. I will also be using some precious stones found in the Pacific North- West, as well as South Dakota. All of these have already been tumbled, because of their time being plummeted against other rocks on the shoreline or river beds. These I use in my wire wrapping, for pendants, rings, or earrings. (The smaller stones in the form of chips or small round beads have been purchased for use as accents to the jewelry). I use 18 or 20 gauge half-hard half-round Sterling Silver wire, and 20 gauge round 14k Rolled Gold wire. I don't spend a lot of time in overdoing the "ornamental wire art" aspect of it, because I don't want to take away from the beauty of the stones, but I do like how wrapping the stone can enhance their beauty. I have done some wire wrapping on the Abalone, as well as in a variety of my original pendant and earring designs. These are all one-of-a-kind!
