Minus Tide Jewelry : Beach Jewelry / Shell Jewelry / Abalone Jewelry / Semi-precious Stones

Beach Jewelry Line

Each piece of Beach Jewelry is hand made, and a one-of-a-kind creation. I grind,  sand, drill, and polish the shells that I collect, then I craft them into cool pendants, beads, and charms.

The sea shells used in the Beach Jewelry are: Abalone, Clam, Cockle, Cone/Puka, Cowrie/Leho, Dove, Dwarf Janthina, Jingle, Limpet/Opihi, Mosaic,
Mother-of-Pearl (M.O.P.), Nassa, Olive, Oyster, Pandora, Periwinkle, Red/ Black Lip, Scallop, Cebu Beauty, Tegula, and Thorn Drupe. Most of these shells I have hand collected from Maui, or central/northern California beaches, some I have acquired from outside sources. Accents that may be included in the shell jewelry are: genuine semi-precious gem stones or crystals, Coconut beads, Bamboo beads, generic and fancy wood beads, GP beads, SP Bali beads, Celtic Charms or Sterling Silver beads.

Not all the shells mentioned are being represented at the same time in the available inventory. You can request "specific shells", if you wish to customize a piece, and when you do, it truly becomes unique unto you!

With any order you may request a specific size and style of necklace: assorted metal chains, different colors of leather, black satin cording, or hemp; as well as whatever style of enclosures you prefer for necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. See the order form for options, and how to order.

Other materials used are: Red and Pink Coral, Bone, Petrified Wood, Fossils, and Cultured
Fresh Water (CFW)  Pearls.

Abalone Jewelry

Hand sculpted Abalone Pendant on dyed Mother-of-Pearl shell Necklace I use Abalone as one of the types of shells I sculpt into pendants, earrings, beads, and charms in my Beach Jewelry Line. I get my shells for my Abalone jewelry from my family members, who enjoy the diving; the battle against the raging seas to pry hem from their rocks, and then the feast after.  This is a rare shell in Central California because of their limited numbers, short harvesting season, and that it is a highly sought after food delicacy. I use Red, Pink, Green and Black Abalone varieties when available. The name just references the color of the outer shell, which in turn, affects its inner iridescent hues. In New Zealand there is a blue variety that the locals call Paua (this is the most common in the jewelry market). The term "Mother-of-Pearl" is used occasionally in relation to Abalone jewelry, when referencing the iridescent "pearly" inner section of the shell, but in all actuality  the "mother of the pearl" is the Oyster ! In some cases they can have similar hues to the inside of their shell.  The Abalone, in my opinion, is far more striking in its vivid variety of colors!

NOTE: Abalone, however, is a highly toxic shell when cutting into, sanding, and grinding. You must use a very protective breathing mask. Because of the rarity, the hazards in harvesting, and the dangers in manufacturing, legitimate Abalone products will be more expensive!  There are fabricated Abalone look-a-likes out there that are very cheap to come by, that are dyed into a variety of colors, but in my opinion also look cheap!  So buyer beware, know the difference as a consumer, AND whenever possible support your local American industry. China, Indonesia, and the Philippines do not have the same laws governing Abalone harvesting, and their workers' labor also comes cheap.
