Meaning in the Stones

You will find information here about the healing properties (physical, emotional, and spiritual)within the crystals and precious stones I use in my jewelry making.  I have referred to The Essential Crystal Handbook by Simon and Sue Lilly, as well as the Encyclopedia of Crystals by Judy Hall for my information. I tried to set up this page in the easiest way possible I could for the reader, to make it easier to understand, and reference. I hope you find it useful for your personal needs, and in your jewelry selection.
I have also consulted numerous sources for information about stones used in Astrology/Zodiac. Everything I researched had lots of contradictory and confusing bits of information, from one source to another. What I have done on this page then is compile everything into its common denominator.
Part of the confusion I found when researching books, or websites is this: stones are referenced by birth month, by astrological sign (the constellation associated with your day of birth), ruling planets, cultural belief systems, geographical regions, and time period. Based on all these factors there are then: Birth stones, Amulets, Talismans, Power Stones, Planetary Stones, Healing Stones/Crystals, and Mystical Stones. I have provided charts at the end of this page to better help you pin point the stone that is best suited for its particular use.

                                The Zodiac
Western Astrology is based on the belief that the elliptical path of the principal planets, moon, and sun directly influence our lives here on Earth. This path is an imaginary band that goes across the celestial sphere. It is measured from the point of the Spring Equinox on the ecliptic, starting with Aries (March 21- April 19 -the beginning of Spring). It is then divided into 12 equal parts that are each 30 degrees wide within this band. Each part was then assigned the name of the constellation ("signs") associated with it: the Zodiac.Astrol- a circular diagram representing the 12 constellations
The belief in Zodiac/Astrol stones embraces the idea that harmony exists between all things; the stone receives vibrations from its corresponding constellation, and then in turn can strengthen the planetary Zodiacal influence. Each sign has a planet that is its ruler, and the planets vibrate and transmit cosmic energy as well.
The jewelry (rings, bracelets, pendants, or amulets) used with these stones should be fashioned in such a way that light will pass through the stone to the body. It must be open backed, and the stone must be mounted in such a way that it comes into direct physical contact with the skin.
Stones thought to have powers of protection are called Talismans.  These are not worn on the body, but put in the home, in the pocket, or in the car. In ancient times, they were  engraved with the corresponding zodiac sign.
A Power Stone is a stone with a power animal engraved on it, and it used for encouragement, empowerment, success, achievement, or aid in recovery from something like an addiction, where much strength of will is needed.
Each sign rules many stones as a result of Pope Greg revising our calendar, and the "months" no longer correspond directly with the constellations in the sky. As a result, around every third week of each calendar month, the sun changes "signs"; therefore, it is not possible to assign any stone to a particular "month".  To have a meaningful system of birth stones, it is the Zodiac (the celestial constellation, "sign") at the time of birth that is the determining factor, not the actual month in which we were born.
You should follow your feelings as well when choosing a stone, because despite all else, you may be drawn to a particular stone or crystal for a reason. It is up to you then to determine what reason that may be.

*Our earliest astronomers were the Mesopotamians. They identified the seven classical planets by what could be seen by the naked eye. They considered the Sun and the Moon as part of those planets. (It wasn't until the invention of the telescope that Uranus and Neptune were added in association with the Zodiac.) The Sun, Moon, Venus and Mercury were considered the social planets, when determining personality traits, while Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn were considered trans personal planets. These seven classical planets were believed to represent the basic human drives within each individual. Each of the 12 signs represent 12 different personalities. These 12 signs are divided into 4 elements. Fire and Air are considered masculine qualities to a personality, while Water and Earth are considered feminine. In turn, a stone was then attributed to a planet in correlation with the elements and the a color that represents it. The chart below helps illustrate the relationship amongst all of the above.

The ancient list of birth stones has been referenced since biblical times up until 1912, when the gem associations changed them to suit availability and commercial needs (twice more until 1938).
Depending on where you are getting your information, the source could be referring to the modern gem stone list, or the traditional/ancient gem stone list. They are also being listed by primary stone (Ruby or Garnet), and secondary stone/Alternate stone (Sun stone or Red Jasper) for each category.  I will only be referencing the traditional stones (often a secondary stone) herein.
The stones can become a vessel to channel energies from the planets and constellations to you; from within you, back out in to the universe to help shape your life and destiny; or through you, into another in the form of healing
. However, with all belief systems, it is a matter of the power of your mind and spirit, that ultimately determines its effects.

*If you notice the shift of stones, down one to the right in the Zodiac column from the Birthstone, you will see then how a "sign" can have many stones associated with it depending upon the concept of the calendar in relation to the timing of the constellations. In Astrology you hear the term "on the cusp of", which means your birthday fell at a time where in some of the following years it will fluctuate between signs, so in theory you can embrace both as your ruling planets, constellations, and elements.
